Claude Lands in Word

Anthropic released “Claude by Anthropic for Word,” an Office extension that can read documents, edit selected text, resolve comments, and track every change while keeping the user in control. The extension is listed in Microsoft AppSource and Digital Trends tested it as a document‑centric integration for paid users (digitaltrends.com) (support.claude.com).

Anthropic has released a Microsoft Word add-in that lets Claude edit documents inside Word, with every change shown as tracked markup. (claude.com) The add-in is listed as “Claude by Anthropic for Word” in Microsoft’s marketplace, where Anthropic says it can read complex multi-section files, work through comment threads, and preserve formatting, numbering, and styles. Microsoft’s AppSource listing says the app can read and make changes to a document and send data over the internet. (marketplace.microsoft.com) Anthropic’s product page says users can highlight a paragraph, ask for a rewrite, and keep edits limited to the selected text. The same page says Claude can read Word comments, change the anchored text as a tracked edit, and reply in the comment thread with what it changed. (claude.com) This pushes Claude further from a chat window and deeper into Microsoft’s document workflow. Anthropic has spent the past year adding file creation, Microsoft 365 access, and Office add-ins so users can work on documents, spreadsheets, and presentations without copying content back and forth. (support.claude.com 1) (support.claude.com 2) (support.claude.com 3) Anthropic says Claude can now carry context across its Word, Excel, and PowerPoint add-ins in one conversation. That means a user can ask Claude to pull numbers from a workbook, use them in a Word draft, and keep the same thread moving across apps. (claude.com) (support.claude.com) The current rollout is narrow. Anthropic says Claude for Word is in beta and available on Claude Team and Enterprise plans, and the product page says it supports.docx and.docm files, with older formats such as.doc and.rtf needing conversion first. (claude.com) That positioning points at legal, finance, and policy teams that already live in tracked changes and comment chains. Anthropic’s examples on the Word page include contract review, thesis drafting from a 10-K filing, and checking whether changes in section 4 are “dealbreakers.” (claude.com) Anthropic is also leaning on review controls instead of silent automation. Its Word page says users can accept or reject each edit in Word’s review pane, and warns that Claude can make mistakes and tracked changes should be reviewed before acceptance, especially in client-facing documents. (claude.com) Digital Trends, which tested the feature, described it as a document-centered integration for paid users rather than a generic chatbot bolted onto Office. The pitch is simple: keep the writing, redlining, and comment cleanup inside Word, where those decisions already get made. (digitaltrends.com)
