US Escalates Iran War, Closes Embassies
The U.S. is shuttering embassies and evacuating diplomats across the Middle East as its conflict with Iran, codenamed "Operation Epic Fury," enters a fourth day. The Pentagon's stated objectives have reportedly shifted from neutralizing missile sites to regime change, while the IAEA warns it "cannot rule out" a radiological release from the strikes.
The joint U.S.-Israeli "Operation Epic Fury" began on February 28 with a wave of over 100 aircraft striking military targets across at least nine Iranian cities. A primary early objective was achieved with a U.S.-enabled Israeli strike that killed Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The diplomatic pullout follows direct Iranian retaliation. Drones struck the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, causing a small fire, while the embassy in Kuwait was also attacked and closed. The State Department has since ordered non-emergency personnel to evacuate from missions in Iraq, Qatar, Jordan, and the UAE, and has urged U.S. citizens to depart immediately from more than a dozen countries in the region. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi specified that while no radiation spikes have been detected in neighboring countries, the agency has been unable to contact Iranian nuclear authorities. Iran's envoy to the IAEA alleged that the Natanz nuclear facility, a key uranium enrichment site, was among the targets struck. The military action has drawn a mixed international response. Leaders from the UK, France, and Germany have called for de-escalation and a return to international law, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen requesting an emergency UN Security Council meeting. In contrast, NATO chief Mark Rutte voiced support for the operation. Global energy markets reacted immediately to the instability, with Brent crude oil prices jumping roughly 8.5% to $79 a barrel. European natural gas prices saw a more dramatic surge of 38% amid fears of disruption to the Strait of Hormuz, the transit point for about 20% of the world's oil supply. The conflict has expanded beyond Iran's borders, with Israel conducting new strikes against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. Iran's retaliatory campaign, dubbed "Operation Truthful Promise 4," included a calculated strike on Dubai, a move analysts believe was intended to maximize global economic panic. The White House's call for regime change has been met with skepticism within the U.S. intelligence community. CIA assessments presented before the operation reportedly concluded that Khamenei's death could lead to his replacement by hard-line figures from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), making a collapse of the current system unlikely in the near term.
