Sony PS5 Pro Gets Major Visual Boost with AI
Sony has released a significant update for the PlayStation 5 Pro, introducing PSSR 2.0, a new AI-driven super upscaling technology. The feature is being hailed as a "phenomenal improvement" in visual fidelity for 4K and 8K gaming. The hardware leap is expected to drive upgrades and increase pressure on competing PC and cloud gaming platforms.
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony's proprietary upscaling technology, developed in collaboration with AMD under an initiative known as "Project Amethyst". The technology is based on AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 4, representing a significant co-development effort between the two companies. The technology leverages a custom machine learning architecture and a dedicated AI Accelerator within the PS5 Pro console. This hardware allows the system to render games at a lower internal resolution and then use AI to reconstruct the image to a higher output resolution, increasing performance and frame rates. This software enhancement is powered by the PS5 Pro's upgraded hardware, which launched in November 2024. The console features a GPU with 45% faster rendering, a 10% increase in CPU peak frequency, and system memory that is 28% faster than the standard PS5. The improved PSSR made its debut on February 27, 2026, with the launch of *Resident Evil Requiem*. A system-level software update scheduled for March 2026 will allow gamers to enable an "Enhance PSSR Image Quality" setting for any of the more than 50 titles that already support the original PSSR. Developers at Capcom praised the upgraded PSSR for its ability to handle details traditionally difficult to upscale. Senior Manager Masaru Ijuin noted its success in processing the intricacy of individual strands of hair, which are rendered as separate polygons in their new RE Engine. PSSR is Sony's answer to established PC upscaling technologies like Nvidia's Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) and AMD's FSR. While DLSS has historically been praised for superior image quality due to its dedicated AI hardware, the latest versions of FSR have significantly closed the gap. Sony's internal ambitions for the technology extend beyond the current hardware's capabilities. The long-term goal for PSSR is to eventually deliver 4K gaming at 120 FPS and 8K at 60 FPS on future PlayStation consoles.
