San Jose Public Library will begin its 2026 Summer Learning program on June 1, opening a two-month reading challenge that runs through July 31 across the city’s library system. The free program is open to all ages, and participants can log reading to qualify for prizes, according to the library’s Summer Learning page. Pre-registration opened May 1, with extra giveaway entries for people who sign up before the program starts. NBC Bay Area reported the annual program this week as the library began promoting the summer campaign. ### When does the reading challenge start, and who can join? June 1 is the first day San Jose Public Library will begin counting reading for this year’s Summer Learning program. The library says the challenge runs through July 31 and invites “everyone” to participate, including children, teens and adults. San Jose Public Library is presenting the program systemwide, and its website says readers can join regardless of age. The library describes the event as an annual summer program built around reading, learning and prizes. ### What do participants have to do? Reading minutes are the core measure in this year’s program. San Jose Public Library says participants can log their reading during the June 1-to-July 31 window for chances to win prizes. The library’s marketing materials say readers can register and track progress through Beanstack, the reading-challenge platform used by many public libraries. SJPL’s public-facing Summer Learning page says logging reading earns participants a chance at prizes and encourages users to explore books and other library resources over the summer. ### What prizes are being offered? May 31 is the deadline for early registration giveaways. San Jose Public Library says youth and adults who sign up before then will have a chance to win either an SJPL grocery tote bag or a family four-pack to a San Francisco Giants game. NBC Bay Area’s item on the program also highlighted the tote bags and Giants family four-packs as examples of this year’s rewards. The library has not, on the pages reviewed, posted a full public list of all end-of-program prize quantities, but it says additional rewards are available through the challenge. ### How big was the program last year? More than 3.1 million reading minutes were logged in last year’s Summer Learning program, according to San Jose Public Library’s 2026 campaign page. The library also said more than 11,500 participants took part and more than 142,000 books were read systemwide. April 23 marked one of the library’s early public pushes for the 2026 program. In a blog post published that day, SJPL staff said pre-registration would begin May 1 and confirmed the official program dates of June 1 through July 31. ### Where do people sign up? SJPL directs readers to its Summer Learning webpage to register for the challenge. The library’s homepage is also carrying a promotional banner telling visitors that pre-registration is open and that people who register by May 31 can “win big.” San Jose Public Library’s materials say the program is free and available across its branches. A separate Summer Learning marketing toolkit published by the library says participants can register and track reading in the Beanstack app to be eligible for grand prizes. ### Is there anything tied to the program besides reading logs? June 1 through July 31 also marks the run of “Read to Raise 2026,” a fundraiser listed by the San Jose Public Library Foundation. The foundation says that campaign supports literary arts programs at SJPL, including Summer Learning and Winter Learning. July 31 is the end date for both the reading challenge and the foundation fundraiser. For residents who want the early giveaway entry, the next deadline comes sooner: May 31 is the last day to pre-register before the summer program officially opens on June 1.
