Lowry and Smotherman Tied for Golf Lead
The Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches is heading for a suspenseful final round with Shane Lowry and Austin Smotherman tied at the top of the leaderboard. Both players have separated themselves from a tightly packed field, with Lowry seeking another PGA Tour win and Smotherman chasing his first PGA Tour victory.
Shane Lowry, a resident of the area, has a history of strong performances at PGA National, finishing in the top five in three of the last four years at this event. In 2022, he was a runner-up, narrowly losing by one stroke to Sepp Straka after being caught in a sudden downpour on the final hole. Lowry's last victory on the PGA Tour came in the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, a team event he won alongside Rory McIlroy. His third-round 8-under 63 was his lowest career round at PGA National, propelling him to the top of the leaderboard. Austin Smotherman, a former college teammate of Bryson DeChambeau at SMU, is in pursuit of his first PGA Tour title. He regained his PGA Tour card for the 2026 season after a successful 2025 on the Korn Ferry Tour, where he won two tournaments. This is Smotherman's second stint on the PGA Tour, having previously played from 2021 to 2024 before losing his card. He has three career wins on the Korn Ferry Tour and one on the PGA Tour Latinoamérica. The duo will have to fend off a chasing pack that includes Nico Echavarria and Taylor Moore, who are just one shot behind at 12-under par. Jimmy Stanger, who has battled serious elbow issues for the past two years, sits alone in fifth place at 11-under. The Champion course at PGA National, which has hosted the tournament since 2007, is known for its challenging layout, particularly the three-hole stretch known as "The Bear Trap" (holes 15, 16, and 17). However, recent course adjustments have led to lower scoring, with last year's event playing as the easiest in its history. Formerly known as The Honda Classic, the event has a rich history dating back to 1972 when it was Jackie Gleason's Inverrary Classic. Past champions include major winners such as Jack Nicklaus, Rory McIlroy, and Justin Thomas.
