Axel Springer Acquires CRE Media Giant Bisnow
German media powerhouse Axel Springer has acquired Bisnow, a leading U.S.-based media and events company focused on commercial real estate. The deal marks a significant consolidation in the B2B media landscape, giving Axel Springer a major foothold in the global real estate information market. Bisnow was previously backed by private equity firm The Wicks Group.
The private equity firm The Wicks Group acquired Bisnow in May 2016 for an estimated $50 million. At that time, the company operated in about 30 metro markets with around 650,000 newsletter subscribers. Founded in 2005 by Mark Bisnow, the company initially focused on providing a lighter, more personality-driven approach to business news for niche audiences. By 2013, Bisnow was generating nearly $14 million in revenue, primarily from its popular industry events. The acquisition is part of Axel Springer's broader strategy of expanding its digital and transatlantic footprint. The German media company has previously made major U.S. acquisitions, including purchasing Politico for over $1 billion in 2021 and taking a majority stake in Business Insider in 2015. This deal deepens Axel Springer's involvement in the real estate sector, where it already operates the AVIV Group, a major player in European real estate classifieds with brands like SeLoger in France and Immowelt in Germany. The acquisition follows a significant corporate restructuring for Axel Springer. In a 2024 deal with private equity firm KKR, Axel Springer separated its media assets, like Politico and Business Insider, from its digital classifieds businesses. Today, Bisnow operates in over 50 local markets across the U.S., Canada, the UK, and Ireland. The platform now reaches more than 11 million readers and hosts over 350 events annually.
