Tesla, Google, Carrier Join Forces

Tesla, Google, and Carrier launched the "Utilize" coalition to unlock underused grid capacity, aiming to save over $100B in U.S. electricity costs.

The coalition aims to tackle rising electricity demand and power bills by improving grid infrastructure utilization. The goal is to help states meet demands from data centers, manufacturing, and electrification. Utilize will push for policies that encourage technologies like battery storage and virtual power plants. They plan to work with state governments to implement these policies. The coalition believes better grid utilization can save U.S. consumers over $100 billion in electricity costs within ten years. A study from The Brattle Group will soon release data quantifying these potential savings. Tesla's participation aligns with its expanding energy storage business and virtual power plant programs. Google, facing surging power demands from AI data centers, also has a strong incentive to participate. Virginia already passed a bipartisan bill requiring utilities to measure and report grid utilization rates. This creates accountability and is a first policy win for the Utilize coalition.
