Nancy Guthrie Investigation Shifts

The Pima County Sheriff's Department announced it's "moving on" from two men previously detained in connection with Nancy Guthrie's disappearance. Authorities have ruled out these individuals as persons of interest with no charges filed, and the investigation focus is shifting as detectives pursue new leads. Guthrie went missing in early February and the case continues drawing significant public attention.

Nancy Guthrie, 84, the mother of "Today" show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, was reported missing from her home in Catalina Foothills, Arizona, on February 1, 2026. Evidence found at her residence, including bloodstains confirmed to be hers, indicated she was taken against her will, leading the Pima County Sheriff's Department to treat the case as an abduction. The night she disappeared, Guthrie was dropped off at her home around 9:50 p.m. by her son-in-law. In the early hours of the following morning, a masked individual was captured on her doorbell camera before the device was disconnected at 1:47 a.m. Guthrie's pacemaker app also disconnected from her phone at 2:28 a.m. The investigation, a multi-agency effort involving the FBI, has been extensive. Authorities have analyzed multiple ransom notes demanding cryptocurrency, though no proof of life has been provided. The FBI released images from the doorbell camera showing an armed individual and offered a $50,000 reward for information. The Guthrie family has also offered a $1 million reward for her safe return. Prior to the recent shift in focus, two individuals were taken into custody for questioning after a search of a nearby residence, and a vehicle was seized. However, they were subsequently released without any charges being filed. The case has drawn significant media attention and public concern. Community efforts have included searches and vigils, while Savannah Guthrie has suspended her broadcasting duties to be with her family and has made public appeals for her mother's return. Investigators continue to pursue thousands of tips and analyze forensic evidence. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has stated that they believe Nancy Guthrie is still alive and that they are getting closer to solving the case. The FBI has also been questioning neighbors about potential internet outages on the night of her disappearance.
