OpenAI and Tata Partner on India AI Infrastructure

OpenAI is partnering with Tata to secure 100MW of AI-ready data center capacity in India, with plans to potentially scale up to 1GW. The partnership signals India's growing importance as a global AI compute hub. As part of its expansion, OpenAI will open new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru, and Tata will deploy ChatGPT Enterprise internally to foster AI literacy across its workforce.

- This partnership is part of a broader government-backed push called the IndiaAI Mission, which has an outlay of over $1.2 billion to build the country's sovereign AI infrastructure and democratize access to computing resources. - The data centers will be developed by Tata Consultancy Services' (TCS) HyperVault unit, established in 2025 to build secure, large-scale, green energy-powered infrastructure for AI workloads. OpenAI will be the first customer for this new business unit. - India now represents a significant user base for OpenAI, with over 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users, making it the company's second-largest market globally. - The collaboration is part of a larger "OpenAI for India" initiative announced at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, which focuses on building sovereign AI capabilities, accelerating enterprise adoption, and upskilling the workforce. - As part of the deal, TCS will become the first organization outside of the United States to participate in OpenAI's certification program, designed to equip professionals with practical AI skills. - The initiative aligns with intense competition in India's AI infrastructure space, with NVIDIA also announcing major partnerships with Yotta, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), and others to deploy tens of thousands of its GPUs. - Tata Group's broader AI strategy involves not just infrastructure but also building an AI data insights platform and an "AI operating system for industries" in collaboration with Tata Communications. - To support workforce development, the OpenAI Foundation and TCS will collaborate on AI training for Indian youth, with the goal of improving the livelihoods of at least one million young adults.
