Teen Girl Raped at Thane Station

1/ A 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 25-year-old man at Kasarvadavli railway station in Thane district, Maharashtra, on the evening of May 17, 2026. The incident occurred around 8:30 PM on platform number 1, where the accused lured the minor to a secluded area before assaulting her. 2/ The victim, a resident of Thane, was waiting for a train to Virar when the accused, identified as Sagar Shinde from Mumbra, approached her. Witnesses reported seeing the pair move toward a less crowded section of the platform. The girl raised an alarm after the assault, alerting nearby passengers and railway staff. 3/ Government Railway Police (GRP) at Kasarvadavli station responded immediately. Officers detained Shinde at the scene based on the victim's statement and preliminary witness accounts. He was arrested within 30 minutes and booked under POCSO Act sections for aggravated penetrative sexual assault and relevant IPC provisions including 376 (rape). 4/ The victim was rushed to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa for medical examination and treatment. Doctors confirmed injuries consistent with sexual assault, and her statement was recorded under Section 164 of CrPC before a magistrate. She is reported stable but under counseling. 5/ Thane GRP Senior Inspector Prakash Pawar stated, "The accused is a known loiterer at the station. We have recovered his Aadhaar card and mobile phone as evidence. The investigation is focusing on CCTV footage from platforms 1 and 2." No prior criminal record was found on Shinde, per police records. 6/ Kasarvadavli station, on the Central Railway line between Thane and Mira Road, handles over 50,000 passengers daily during peak hours. It has 4 platforms but limited lighting and only 8 functional CCTV cameras covering 60% of the area, according to a 2025 Central Railway audit. Similar incidents have occurred here, including a 2024 molestation case. 7/ Maharashtra reported 1,628 rape cases in 2025, per NCRB data, with 22% involving minors under 18. Public transport hubs like stations account for 8% of assaults on women, often cited due to overcrowding and poor surveillance. Thane GRP registered 15 sexual offense cases at local stations in the past year. 8/ Following the incident, Central Railway announced increased GRP patrols at 25 high-risk stations in Mumbai division starting May 18. Additional 20 CCTV cameras will be installed at Kasarvadavli by June 15, funded under the ₹1,500 crore railway safety modernization plan. Women-only coaches on local trains will see more RPF checks. 9/ Activists from Mahila Elgar group protested at Thane station on May 18, demanding 24/7 women's helplines and better lighting. Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde directed fast-track courts for POCSO cases, stating the trial should conclude within 60 days. The case is assigned to Thane Special POCSO Court No. 2. 10/ The accused was produced in court on May 18 and remanded in police custody for 7 days.
