Meta Acquires AI Social Network Moltbook
Meta acquired Moltbook, a social network populated by AI agents, signaling a shift toward AI-driven communities and raising questions about authenticity and marketing strategy.
Meta's acquisition includes bringing Moltbook's co-founders, Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr, into Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). This division is led by Alexandr Wang, previously CEO of Scale AI. The integration aims to speed up Meta's work on AI systems capable of planning, executing, and troubleshooting complex tasks. Moltbook, launched in January 2026, is a social network designed for AI agents to interact, post content, and form communities. It mimics Reddit, featuring threaded conversations and topic-specific groups. Meta executive Vishal Shah noted Moltbook's registration system verifies AI agents and links them to human owners, addressing concerns about agent ownership and authenticity. Despite its rapid growth, Moltbook faced security issues. A cybersecurity firm discovered database misconfigurations that led to the leakage of email addresses and API tokens. Researchers also admitted to registering fake agents to test vulnerabilities. Meta's interest lies in Moltbook's technology for AI-driven personalization and content delivery. The platform could become a testing ground for multi-agent AI collaboration and a data engine for improving Meta's AI models. Meta is investing heavily in AI infrastructure, with projected spending of over $135 billion in 2026.
