Fremont police arrested a man with a gun after officers found him hiding inside a dumpster following a foot chase on April 20. (patch.com) The encounter began at about 8:38 a.m. near Industrial Drive and South Grimmer Boulevard, where patrol officers saw what police described as a suspicious person walking in the area. Officers tried to stop him after seeing what appeared to be the outline of a firearm in his pocket, police said. (patch.com; yahoo.com) Police said the man ran, climbed fences and went through barbed wire during the chase. Neighbors then pointed officers toward a dumpster, where the suspect was found hiding. (patch.com; yahoo.com) Fremont officers used a drone and a police dog during the search, according to local and regional reports. SFGATE reported the suspect was booked on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm. (sfgate.com; yahoo.com) The case also shows how Fremont police now routinely deploy drones alongside ground officers. The department says it launched a public safety drone program with Fremont Fire in 2017 and expanded it into a Drone as First Responders program in late 2022. (fremontpolice.gov) Fremont police say their K-9 teams work with patrol, SWAT and tracking units, which helps explain why a dog was used in a short search through fences, yards and commercial edges. The department lists multiple active K-9 teams as of February 2026. (fremontpolice.gov) As of April 24, Fremont police had not posted a separate press release about the arrest on the department’s public news page, which still showed older releases and community notices. The department’s website says detectives in its investigations unit handle robberies, felony assaults and other crimes against persons when cases move beyond the initial arrest. (fremontpolice.gov; fremontpolice.gov) The chase ended where the suspect tried to disappear: inside a trash dumpster, after neighbors, a drone and a K-9 narrowed the search to one hiding place.
