Rodrygo's ACL Ends Season

Real Madrid's Brazilian forward Rodrygo has suffered a torn ACL and will miss the rest of the season, including the upcoming World Cup. Rodrygo called it "one of the worst days of my life". This leaves both Madrid's title push and Brazil's World Cup squad without a key attacking option.

The injury is more severe than just the ACL tear; medical scans also confirmed a torn lateral meniscus in his right leg. This complex injury could extend his recovery period up to a year, well beyond the initial 7-9 month estimates. The incident occurred just 12 minutes after he came on as a substitute in the 1-0 loss to Getafe, having just returned from a month-long absence due to tendonitis. In a show of resilience, Rodrygo played for nearly 30 minutes after his knee buckled in the 66th minute of the match. This season in La Liga, the 25-year-old had scored one goal and provided three assists in 19 appearances. Across all competitions for Real Madrid, he had contributed a total of three goals and four assists. The injury leaves Real Madrid critically short of attacking options during a crucial part of their season. With superstar Kylian Mbappé also sidelined by injury and Franco Mastantuono suspended, Vinicius Junior and youngster Gonzalo are the only recognized forwards available for manager Alvaro Arbeloa. For Brazil, the timing is a significant blow to their World Cup preparations, with the tournament kicking off in June. National team coach Carlo Ancelotti must now look to other talents like Raphinha, Richarlison, and Gabriel Martinelli to fill the void left by a player who had become a regular starter. This situation is reminiscent of other stars missing major tournaments due to ACL tears. Radamel Falcao, then one of the world's top strikers, was ruled out of the 2014 World Cup for Colombia after suffering a similar injury while playing for Monaco.
