Cristina Bucsa Upsets Paolini in Merida

Cristina Bucsa advanced to the Merida final with a 7-5, 6-4 upset over Jasmine Paolini, holding off comebacks in both sets. The victory marks a significant breakthrough for Bucsa against the higher-ranked Italian.

This victory in Merida represents Cristina Bucsa's first-ever WTA Tour singles title, a significant milestone in the 28-year-old's career. While a decorated doubles player with eight titles, this singles breakthrough at a WTA 500 event marks a new high for the Spanish player. The win over Jasmine Paolini in the semifinals was a landmark achievement for Bucsa, marking her first victory against a top-10 opponent. At the time of the match, Paolini was ranked number 7 in the world, highlighting the magnitude of the upset. Bucsa's path to the final was impressive as she did not lose a single set in her prior matches. Before her semifinal triumph, she defeated the 2024 Merida champion, Zeynep Sonmez, in the quarterfinals. In the final, Bucsa overcame Poland's Magdalena Fręch in a three-set battle, winning 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Fręch was ranked 57th at the time of the tournament. Prior to this tournament, Bucsa's career-high singles ranking was 50, achieved in January 2026. This victory is projected to significantly boost her standing. The Moldovan-born Spaniard has previously won a WTA 125 singles title and is also an Olympic bronze medalist in doubles. The Mérida Open Akron is a relatively new event on the WTA Tour, with its first edition held in 2023. The tournament is played on outdoor hardcourts at the Yucatán Country Club.
