Anthropic launches 'Claude for Word'

Anthropic announced Claude for Word, a Word add‑in that claims features like pulling structured data from Excel directly into documents, tracked changes preservation, and local processing without file syncing. Anthropic has launched a Word add-in that puts Claude inside Microsoft Word and keeps work inside local files instead of syncing documents to the cloud. (x.com) Anthropic said the tool can pull structured data from Microsoft Excel directly into a draft, preserve Word’s tracked changes, and work on files stored on a user’s device. (x.com) A Word add-in is a small program that runs inside Microsoft Word, where legal, finance, and policy teams already do redlines, comments, and versioned drafts. Microsoft’s own Copilot for Microsoft 365 also works inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. (support.microsoft.com) (microsoft.com) Anthropic has spent the past year pushing Claude deeper into workplace software instead of keeping it in a standalone chat box. The company launched app connections in May 2025, interactive Claude apps in January 2026, and a research-preview desktop agent called Claude Cowork that works across local files and applications. (techcrunch.com 1) (techcrunch.com 2) (anthropic.com) The pitch here is document fidelity: keep formatting, comments, and revisions intact while Claude helps write or update a file. That addresses one of the most common complaints about using general chatbots for office documents, where tables, citations, and tracked edits often break when text moves in and out of Word. (x.com) (support.microsoft.com) Anthropic already had an Excel foothold in one vertical before this launch. In October 2025, the company said Claude for Financial Services included a native Excel plug-in for modeling, comparable-company analysis, and earnings work. (anthropic.com) Anthropic is also selling into a Microsoft ecosystem that now includes Claude in other places. Anthropic said in November 2025 that Claude models became available in Microsoft Foundry and Microsoft 365 Copilot, giving Azure and Microsoft 365 customers another way to use Claude inside Microsoft products. (anthropic.com) That makes the new Word add-in less like a one-off feature and more like another front in the fight over who owns office work: the model maker, the software suite, or both. Anthropic’s bet is that users will care about what happens to the document after the AI writes the first draft. (anthropic.com) (x.com)
