New State Minister Appointed

Delroy Williams, the newly-elected Member of Parliament for Clarendon Central, has been appointed State Minister in the Ministry of Local and Rural Development. The appointment marks a quick ascent for Williams in his public service career.

Before his recent election to Parliament for Clarendon Central, Delroy Williams served an eight-year tenure as the Mayor of Kingston, beginning in 2016. During his time as mayor, he focused on transforming the city into a resilient and sustainable destination. His administration in Kingston prioritized increasing green spaces, formalizing the street vendor economy, and raising the city's international profile as a hub for sports, trade, and culture. Williams also previously served as a Senator and has been a councillor for the Seivwright Gardens Division since 2003. In his new role, Williams will support the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Desmond McKenzie, a long-serving figure in Jamaican politics. The ministry's responsibilities are extensive, covering community development, disaster preparedness, parochial roads, and solid waste management. Williams has stated that his experience in municipal leadership has prepared him for the new role, giving him insight into the issues and policy processes at the local government level. He has expressed a commitment to supporting the current strategic direction of the country under Prime Minister Andrew Holness.
