Etihad Airways said Friday it will add six routes from Abu Dhabi to Africa, widening its network in a market Gulf carriers have been courting for traffic and cargo. (etihad.com) The new destinations are Accra, Asmara, Harare, Kinshasa, Lubumbashi and Lagos, according to Etihad’s April 17 announcement. The airline said the expansion links high-growth African markets to Abu Dhabi and onward connections beyond the United Arab Emirates. (etihad.com) Etihad’s published schedule shows Asmara starting first on Nov. 7, 2026, with four weekly flights. Accra, Kinshasa and Lagos are set to begin in March 2027, and a three-times-weekly Abu Dhabi-Harare-Lubumbashi routing is scheduled from March 24, 2027. (aeroroutes.com) The Lagos route marks a return: AeroRoutes said Etihad last served Nigeria until 2020. The new Lagos service is listed as daily, while Accra is planned four times a week and Kinshasa three times a week, all on Boeing 787-9 aircraft. (aeroroutes.com) The Africa push comes as Etihad says it is building a corridor through Abu Dhabi between Africa and Asia. In its statement, the airline tied the six-route launch to its growing China network and its established India network. (etihad.com) That strategy leans on geography as much as demand: Gulf hubs sit between African cities and markets in South Asia, East Asia and Europe, making one-stop itineraries and cargo transfers easier to sell. Etihad said the new routes are aimed at trade, investment and passenger flows, not only leisure traffic. (etihad.com) The route list also shows Etihad adding depth in places where nonstop long-haul options are limited. Two of the six destinations are in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with Kinshasa served nonstop and Lubumbashi paired with Harare on the same rotation. (aeroroutes.com) Etihad framed the move as part of a broader growth plan from Abu Dhabi rather than a one-off seasonal add. On Friday, the carrier said the six African routes strengthen its footprint across the continent and reinforce Abu Dhabi’s role as a connecting hub. (etihad.com)
