Carbon markets hit $1T; China bets on hydrogen

Carbon trading has surged into the mainstream—major exchanges like ICE, Xpansiv and ACX now handle more than $1 trillion in annual transactions, turning emissions into a liquid market reported. At the same time China announced a national target to deploy 100,000 hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles by 2030, a big industrial bet that could redirect investment toward clean-transport technologies reported.

ICE’s environmental markets traded a record 6.2 million contracts in 2025, including 4.2 million California Carbon Allowances and a single‑day EUA peak of 193,000 contracts on Jan. 20, 2026 reported)). Market analysis naming Intercontinental Exchange, Xpansiv, AirCarbon Exchange (ACX) and ESGCX estimates combined annual carbon transactions have now exceeded $1 trillion in notional value in 2026 reported)). Xpansiv’s data team says the CBL spot venue controls more than 90% of global exchange‑traded spot carbon‑credit volume, a concentration that helps drive price discovery across voluntary and compliance markets noted)). AirCarbon Exchange operates a regulated exchange and clearing house in the Abu Dhabi Global Market and has executed key trades underpinned by strategic backers such as Mubadala, bringing institutional‑grade settlement to voluntary credits announced)). MSCI’s 2025 “State of Integrity” review rated over 4,400 carbon projects and identified project‑level quality and verification as decisive factors for buyer demand and credit pricing in 2026 reported)). A March 16, 2026 circular jointly issued by three departments including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology set a national target of 100,000 hydrogen fuel‑cell vehicles by 2030 and aimed to reduce end‑user hydrogen prices below 25 yuan/kg (about $3.62), with roughly 15 yuan targeted in leading regions reported)). The same notice mandates four‑year pilots run by city clusters, offers central reward funds capped at a maximum of 1.6 billion yuan per pilot cluster, and recorded that China had nearly 40,000 fuel‑cell vehicle sales and 574 hydrogen refueling stations (combined daily refueling capacity >360 tonnes) by end‑2025 reported)).
