Bluepoint Games Shuts Down

Bluepoint Games — the studio behind acclaimed remakes — is closing down in March 2026 after Sony couldn't find them a suitable project. The studio pitched a Bloodborne remake multiple times, Sony approved the budget, but FromSoftware said no. Other publishers are reportedly interested in acquiring Bluepoint's technical talent and staff.

Founded in 2006 by Marco Thrush and Andy O'Neil, engineers who had previously worked on the acclaimed *Metroid Prime* at Retro Studios, Bluepoint Games began its journey by creating its own proprietary technology, the Bluepoint Engine. Their first title was the 2006 PlayStation 3 downloadable shooter, *Blast Factor*. The studio quickly became Sony's go-to partner for high-quality remasters, building a reputation with projects like the *God of War Collection* and *Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection*. Their work was known for significant technical improvements, often boosting frame rates and resolutions far beyond the original games. Sony Interactive Entertainment officially acquired the roughly 70-person studio on September 30, 2021. Bluepoint's most celebrated achievements were full, ground-up remakes that earned widespread critical acclaim. The 2018 remake of *Shadow of the Colossus* for the PlayStation 4 holds a Metacritic score of 92, praised for its stunning visuals and faithfulness to the original's vision. Their final released game, the *Demon's Souls* remake, was a launch title for the PlayStation 5 and is also one of the console's highest-rated exclusives with a Metacritic score of 92. The project was undertaken with the blessing of FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki and served as a tribute to co-founder Andy O'Neil, who passed away in 2019. Before the closure, Bluepoint had been tasked with developing a live-service *God of War* title, a project that was eventually canceled in January 2025. The game was reportedly a cooperative experience centered on Kratos's son, Atreus, navigating the Greek underworld. Following that cancellation, the studio pitched several other projects that were ultimately rejected. Besides the *Bloodborne* remake that FromSoftware vetoed, Bluepoint also proposed an updated version of their own *Shadow of the Colossus* remake and a spin-off of *Ghost of Tsushima*.
