Horndean Green Trail Network

The Horndean Green Trail and Heritage Network is expanding thanks to a £12,000 funding boost from the East Hampshire District Council (EHDC) to the Horndean Parish Council (HPC). The funds will be used to create more footpaths and trails around the parish, encouraging locals and visitors alike to walk and cycle. The project aims to connect people with the area's nature and history. The EHDC funding will support the installation of way-markers and informational boards to help people navigate the trails and learn about the local area. Volunteers have been maintaining the area for years, clearing sections to keep them accessible. The Green Trail project seeks to highlight existing footpaths and Horndean's heritage sites. The first phase of the project, funded by a Defra grant, is expected to open in March. Future plans include trails to the new Hazleton Meadow development. The long-term project aims to improve community integration and make local history and natural spaces more accessible for recreation, education, and environmental awareness. The Catherington Lith portion of the trail features tree sculptures by Farnham artist Michael Jones, funded by a £35,000 Rural Grant from the East Hampshire District Council. The trail also includes improved footpaths and information boards detailing the Lith's history and wildlife. The Catherington Trail itself highlights the natural and historic environment and links to the surrounding countryside. The Horndean Parish Council is also seeking community input, inviting residents to share photos, memories, and ideas to highlight points of interest along the trails. The community's contributions will be used by Urban Place Lab to design an online map and wayfinding features that showcase the area's history.
