Crypto Markets Rebound After Iran Strikes

Major cryptocurrencies rebounded over the weekend after a sharp drop following U.S.-Israeli air strikes on Iran. Solana led with a 10.8% gain, Ether reclaimed $2,000, and Bitcoin climbed back above $66,800. Bitcoin erased a $5,000 drop in 24 hours, triggering $657 million in liquidations across leveraged traders.

The initial market plunge followed a major military escalation over the weekend, when joint U.S.-Israeli strikes killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and around 40 other senior officials. The operation's stated goal was to dismantle Iran's military capabilities. Waves of attacks targeted military command facilities, air defense systems, and missile sites across Iran, including strikes in "the heart of Tehran". Iran launched its own retaliatory missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and U.S. military installations in several Gulf countries. The crypto market, which trades 24/7, was the first to react globally, serving as a "liquidity pressure valve" for the initial risk-off sentiment. The total digital asset market capitalization fell by $128 billion in a matter of minutes following the first reports of the strikes. Bitcoin's behavior highlights its complex role during geopolitical turmoil; it often sells off initially like other high-risk assets before attracting demand as a potential "digital gold" or safe-haven asset outside the control of any single government. Despite the volatility, on-chain data suggests short-term Bitcoin holders largely held their positions without panic selling. This muted response may indicate that more speculative investors have already been shaken out of the market during previous periods of instability. Analysts are now watching for the reopening of traditional markets, particularly U.S. stock exchanges and spot Bitcoin ETFs, for a clearer indication of broader investor sentiment. The market's future direction will likely depend heavily on whether the military conflict shows signs of escalation or containment.
