New River Gorge is getting a fresh spring wave of hiking attention, with visitors zeroing in on short overlooks and longer rim trails across the 70,000-acre West Virginia park. (nps.gov) The National Park Service says the park’s hiking network includes marked trails, state-park trails, undeveloped paths and old roads, with one-way distances from 0.25 mile to 7 miles. Trail maps and recommendations are available at Canyon Rim, Grandview, Sandstone and Thurmond visitor centers. (nps.gov) Two of the park’s best-known viewpoint hikes are Long Point and Endless Wall. Long Point runs 1.6 miles one way to a rock outcrop facing the gorge and New River Gorge Bridge, while Endless Wall runs 2.4 miles one way with cliff-edge vistas and a popular turnaround at Diamond Point. (nps.gov 1) (nps.gov 2) For visitors who want a shorter stop, the Canyon Rim Boardwalk is 0.1 mile one way from the visitor center. The top overlook is accessible by ramp, and 178 steps lead down to a lower overlook with bridge views. (nps.gov) The park has been drawing bigger crowds since Congress redesignated it from New River Gorge National River to New River Gorge National Park and Preserve on December 27, 2020. The National Park Service said visitation across the three southern West Virginia park sites reached 1,918,438 in 2023, up 41.8% from 2019. (nps.gov 1) (nps.gov 2) That rise has pushed more first-time visitors toward easy-access overlooks near U.S. Route 19 and Fayetteville, where trailheads sit close to the bridge corridor and visitor services. Canyon Rim and Sandstone are open year-round from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., while Grandview and Thurmond Depot are seasonal. (nps.gov) The park does not charge an entrance fee, which lowers the barrier for day hikers making quick spring trips. The National Park Service also says ranger-led hikes are offered between Memorial Day and Labor Day on trails ranging from popular routes to lesser-known sections of the gorge. (nps.gov 1) (nps.gov 2) Park officials pair that access with repeated warnings about cliff edges, narrow roads and limited parking. The Fern Creek lot for Endless Wall “frequently fills up,” the agency says, and Long Point’s overlook has unprotected cliff edges. (nps.gov) (nps.gov) So the spring rush at New River Gorge is landing on trails built for very different kinds of visitors: a 10-minute boardwalk stop, a moderate bridge-view walk, or a longer rim hike above rapids nearly 1,000 feet below.
