Alcova’s rare venues

Alcova’s 11th edition will occupy the Baggio Military Hospital and—opening to the public for the first time—Villa Pestarini, featuring more than 120 participants across both sites. (gr8collab.substack.com) That kind of rare venue access and scale makes the off‑fair program feel like a must-see for anyone tracking how art and design bleed into fashion culture. Alcova built its name by putting new design inside half-forgotten buildings, and in Milan this year it is going even further by opening a private Franco Albini villa that has never received the public before and by expanding into fresh parts of the former Baggio Military Hospital. (alcova.xyz(alcova.xyz)) (domusweb.it(domusweb.it)) The dates are April 20 to April 26, 2026, and this is Alcova’s eleventh edition, timed to Milan Design Week, when the city fills with brand installations, gallery shows, and off-fair experiments beyond the main furniture fair. (alcova.xyz(alcova.xyz)) (comune.milano.it(comune.milano.it)) Alcova started in Milan in 2018 as a platform for emerging designers, and its formula has stayed simple: take a site with architectural character, leave much of it raw, and let objects, materials, and interiors bounce off the building’s history. (alcova.xyz(alcova.xyz)) (fuorisalone.it(fuorisalone.it)) That formula matters in Milan because the official Salone del Mobile furniture fair happens at the giant Rho exhibition grounds, while Fuorisalone spreads through neighborhoods, palazzos, courtyards, and storefronts across the city. Alcova sits inside that second ecosystem, where the venue can be as talked-about as the chairs. (comune.milano.it(comune.milano.it)) (dezeen.com(dezeen.com)) One of the two 2026 venues is Villa Pestarini at Via Mogadiscio 2/4, a house designed in 1938 and 1939 by Franco Albini, the Milan architect known for turning Italian modernism into something precise, light, and highly livable. It is the only villa Albini designed in Milan. (fuorisalone.it(fuorisalone.it)) (archiproducts.com(archiproducts.com)) Villa Pestarini is unusual not just because of the name attached to it, but because so much of Albini’s original interior survives, including glass-block walls, a marble staircase, sliding partitions, custom furniture, and garden-facing windows. Domus called that level of preservation “miraculous” for a private residence. (domusweb.it(domusweb.it)) (fuorisalone.it(fuorisalone.it)) The other site is the former Baggio Military Hospital at Via Giovanni Labus 15, a large post-First World War complex in western Milan that Alcova already used in 2021 and 2022. For 2026, the organizers are reopening it with a wider footprint and access to areas that were not previously part of the route. (alcova.xyz(alcova.xyz)) (wallpaper.com(wallpaper.com)) Those newly accessible sections include a church, a rectory, and a historic archive, which turns the hospital from a backdrop into a sequence of very different rooms, each carrying a different institutional mood. A lamp shown in a church reads differently from the same lamp shown in a white booth. (surfacemag.com(surfacemag.com)) (fuorisalone.it(fuorisalone.it)) Across the two sites, Alcova says more than 120 international exhibitors will show work, which makes this less like a single exhibition and more like a temporary district stitched together by architecture. Visitors will move between a preserved modernist home and a sprawling institutional ruin in the same week. (fuorisalone.it(fuorisalone.it)) (alcova.xyz(alcova.xyz)) That is why Alcova keeps punching above its size during Milan Design Week: it offers the kind of access that museums, fairs, and brand showrooms usually cannot. In 2026, the draw is not only what designers bring into the rooms, but the fact that the rooms themselves are places most people could not otherwise enter.
