Apple is now showing a new ad disclosure inside Apple Maps in iOS 26.5 beta 2, the clearest sign yet that Maps ads are close to launch. (macrumors.com) The splash screen says Maps “may show local ads” based on approximate location, current search terms, or the part of the map a user is viewing while searching. It also says the advertising data is not linked to the user’s Apple Account. (9to5mac.com) Apple had already started laying the groundwork on March 24, 2026, when its Apple Ads site posted a “Get ready for ads on Apple Maps” notice. Apple’s main Apple Ads page now also says “Coming soon” for Apple Maps promotion tools. (ads.apple.com 1) (ads.apple.com 2) Apple’s pitch is that these ads are contextual, not built from a detailed personal profile. On its Maps ads page, Apple says it uses search terms, approximate device location, and the area of the map on screen, not precise location or Maps interaction history. (ads.apple.com) Apple also says ad views and taps in Maps are tied to a random identifier that rotates multiple times per hour. The company says that setup is meant to prevent Maps from looking up a person through an identifier linked to that person or device. (ads.apple.com) The move fits a broader expansion of Apple’s ad business beyond App Store search placements. In April 2025, Apple changed the business name from Apple Search Ads to Apple Ads after telling developers its ad offerings had grown beyond search. (9to5mac.com) Maps has been on that list for years. Bloomberg reported in August 2022 that Apple was exploring search ads in Maps as part of a push to expand advertising into more of its apps and services. (bloomberg.com) For businesses, the product looks like a paid way to appear when people are already looking for nearby places. For users, it means the app Apple markets as a navigation and discovery tool is preparing to mix sponsored listings into those searches. (ads.apple.com) (apple.com) Apple has not yet announced a public launch date on its newsroom site, but the company’s own ads pages say Apple Maps promotion is “coming soon,” and the beta software now shows users how the system will work.
