USS Dwight D. Eisenhower completed sea trials on April 24 and finished its Planned Incremental Availability at Norfolk Naval Shipyard ahead of schedule. (usff.navy.mil) The aircraft carrier arrived at the yard on January 8, 2025, after leaving Naval Station Norfolk for a scheduled maintenance period. The Navy said the work included repairs, overhauls, inspections and modernization for future deployments. (usff.navy.mil 1) (usff.navy.mil 2) U.S. Fleet Forces Command said Eisenhower became Norfolk Naval Shipyard’s second timely carrier delivery after USS George H.W. Bush completed its own Planned Incremental Availability in November 2024. (usff.navy.mil) A Planned Incremental Availability is a regular yard period for an aircraft carrier, closer to a major tune-up than a full rebuild. The Navy uses it to extend service life and keep ships certified for operations. (usff.navy.mil) The timing matters because Eisenhower had just returned in July 2024 from a nine-month deployment that sent the carrier through the Mediterranean, Red Sea and U.S. 5th Fleet waters. The Navy described that cruise as historic and sustained. (navy.mil) (usff.navy.mil) The carrier also finished maintenance days after a small fire broke out aboard the ship at Norfolk Naval Shipyard on April 15. Naval Sea Systems Command said the fire was quickly extinguished and caused no injuries. (news.usni.org) Eisenhower is the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 2, and its return gives the Navy another deployable Nimitz-class deck as carrier schedules stay tight. The ship’s own public page lists missions from crisis response to sea control and deterrence. (airlant.usff.navy.mil) The Navy had previously considered extending Eisenhower past its planned 2027 retirement because carrier inventory is under pressure while newer ships arrive. That made this availability more than routine yard work. (news.usni.org)
