Inside College Basketball: NIL Impact
Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim says NIL deals don't guarantee success: "You can spend $10 million and lose" [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=]. He also notes geographic proximity in NCAA tournament play as a strategic advantage [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=].
Boeheim's comments on NIL echo earlier statements where he claimed some ACC teams "bought" their players using NIL deals, leading to an apology from the coach. He walked back those statements, clarifying that he believes ACC schools are compliant with NCAA rules. Boeheim has also stated that NIL can be a positive for college basketball, allowing teams to retain players who might otherwise leave for the G League. He cited North Carolina and Miami as examples of teams that have benefited from NIL by keeping key players in school. More recently, Boeheim attributed Syracuse's struggles and the firing of coach Adrian Autry to a lack of NIL resources compared to other teams in the ACC. He noted that Boston College and Georgia Tech also have limited NIL funding.
