OpenAI surfaces vs APIs

- OpenAI updated release notes saying GPT-4.1, previously API-only, is now available directly inside ChatGPT. - The company also removed several older models from ChatGPT while preserving API access to them. - This split illustrates faster product-surface evolution versus the need for stability in developer-facing API contracts. OpenAI’s product lines are moving on different clocks: the company first brought GPT-4.1 from the application programming interface into ChatGPT, then removed it from ChatGPT weeks later while leaving the API unchanged. (help.openai.com, openai.com) OpenAI said in ChatGPT release notes that GPT-4.1, “launched in the API in April,” was made available directly in ChatGPT because it had become popular with developers. The same note described GPT-4.1 as a specialized model for coding tasks. (help.openai.com, help.openai.com) GPT-4.1 entered the API on April 14, 2025, as part of a three-model family with GPT-4.1 mini and GPT-4.1 nano. OpenAI said those models improved on GPT-4o and GPT-4o mini in coding, instruction following, and long-context work. (openai.com) Then the ChatGPT lineup changed again. OpenAI said GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and o4-mini were retired from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026, and said “there are no changes at this time” in the API. (openai.com, help.openai.com) That split shows how OpenAI is treating ChatGPT and the API as different products. ChatGPT model pickers have been reshuffled repeatedly in 2026, including retirements of GPT-5.1 models on March 11 and the introduction of fallback models such as GPT-5.3 Instant Mini on April 9. (help.openai.com, help.openai.com) The API follows a slower process with formal deprecation notices and dated removals. OpenAI’s developer deprecations page lists scheduled sunsets months in advance, including a March 24, 2026 notice for Sora 2 video generation models and the Videos API with a September 24, 2026 removal date. (developers.openai.com) OpenAI has also carved out exceptions for workplace customers inside ChatGPT itself. A help article says Business, Enterprise, and Edu customers kept access to GPT-4o inside Custom GPTs until April 3, 2026, even after the broader February 13 retirement in ChatGPT. (help.openai.com, help.openai.com) For users, that means the model name in ChatGPT is a feature choice that can disappear on a product schedule. For developers, the same name can remain available behind code, billing, and deprecation policies that are published separately. (help.openai.com, developers.openai.com)
