Colorado Jazz Legend Ken Walker Dies

Ken Walker, widely regarded as Colorado's premier jazz bassist, has died. Walker was a staple of the Denver jazz scene, known for his mentorship and collaborations, leaving a significant void in regional jazz with tributes pouring in from across the music world.

An Arkansas native who moved to Denver in 1985, Walker became the bedrock of the city's jazz scene during his 12-year tenure as the house bassist for the legendary El Chapultepec jazz club from 1987 to 1998. He also performed regularly at other key venues like Dazzle and Nocturne, making him a constant presence in the city's musical life. For nearly 30 years, Walker was a deeply influential educator at the University of Denver's Lamont School of Music, where he began teaching in 1991 as the school's first instructor of jazz bass. He mentored generations of musicians with a style described as supportive yet uncompromising, shaping the sound of jazz in the region for decades to come. His position as a first-call bassist for touring icons is a testament to his skill, having shared the stage with a who's who of jazz legends including Freddie Hubbard, Joe Pass, Randy Brecker, James Moody, and Eddie Harris. His collaborations extended to recordings with artists like Phil Woods and Curtis Fuller. As a bandleader, Walker's own recordings achieved national recognition. His 2005 debut album, “Terra Firma,” spent 17 weeks on the Jazz Week Radio charts, and his 2012 release, “Down Home,” hit #1. Walker’s profound impact on Colorado music was officially recognized in October 2024 when he was inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame. This honor capped a career that also included a lifetime achievement award for his contributions to the Five Points Jazz Festival and induction into the Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame. His legacy lives on through his students and his memorable "Ken-isms," pieces of profound musical wisdom like “Play exciting. Don't get excited,” and “Silence is not a mistake.”
