Jayson Tatum's Comeback Complete

Jayson Tatum just notched his first 20-point game of the season after tearing his Achilles 300 days ago — dropping 20 PTS, 3 REB, 2 AST on 6/16 shooting against the Cavs. He'd already shown flashes with 12 points in the first quarter earlier in the game. That's a remarkable return timeline for one of the league's biggest stars.

Tatum's return comes after he ruptured his right Achilles tendon on May 12, 2025, during Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the New York Knicks. The injury occurred with just three minutes left in the game as he lunged for a loose ball. He underwent successful surgery the following day. His 300-day recovery is slightly ahead of the average 10-month timeline for NBA players returning from a torn Achilles. While some players have returned in as little as seven months, others, like Kevin Durant, have taken up to 18 months. Medical experts suggest that undergoing surgery within 24 hours of the injury, as Tatum did, can lead to better long-term outcomes. This was Tatum's first game of the 2025-26 season. In his actual season debut against the Dallas Mavericks two days prior, he played 27 minutes and recorded 15 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 assists after a rusty start where he missed his first six shots. Without Tatum, the defending champion Boston Celtics have remained competitive. At the time of his return, the team held the second-place spot in the Eastern Conference with a 41-21 record. Since Tatum entered the league in 2017, no player has logged more minutes, and the longest he had previously been sidelined was five games due to COVID-19.
