DeWalt offers official advice for battery care
Power tool manufacturer DeWalt has outlined its official best practices for protecting and maximizing the lifespan of its batteries. The company advises users on proper charging cycles, avoiding deep discharge, and storing batteries in moderate climates. These guidelines are intended to help both professionals and hobbyists get more value from their cordless tool systems.
- DeWalt's chargers have a built-in maintenance mode that prevents overcharging, allowing batteries to be left on the charger until they are needed. This is particularly useful for older 18-volt NiCad batteries, which can lose their charge quickly when stored off the charger. - Extreme temperatures are a primary enemy of lithium-ion batteries; DeWalt advises against charging or using batteries in temperatures below 40°F (4°C) or above 105°F (40°C). Storing a fully charged battery in a hot vehicle can significantly reduce its total capacity over time. - For long-term storage, such as over a winter season, it is recommended to fully charge the battery before putting it away. However, for more regular storage, a partial charge of around 40-60% is ideal for preserving the battery's health. - A critical step before charging is to let a battery cool down to room temperature after heavy use. Charging a hot battery can cause irreversible internal damage and shorten its overall lifespan. - While older nickel-cadmium (NiCad) batteries could develop a "memory" and lose runtime from repetitive light use, modern lithium-ion batteries do not have this issue. - The lifespan of a DeWalt battery is typically estimated to be between 300 to 500 charge cycles, which often translates to about three years of use, though this can be extended with proper care. - DeWalt's FLEXVOLT batteries offer versatility by automatically switching between 20V and 60V depending on the tool they are connected to, allowing them to be used across a wider range of high-power and standard tools. - It is recommended to periodically clean the battery contacts with a soft, dry cloth to ensure efficient energy transfer and prevent performance issues caused by dust and debris.
