Backlash Over 'Seven Kingdoms' Casting

The casting of Tazyn Crawford as Tanselle in the upcoming 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' has sparked backlash online, according to Geeks + Gamers. The actress has reportedly responded to what she described as racial negativity surrounding the announcement.

In George R.R. Martin's source novella, "The Hedge Knight," the character Tanselle is a Dornish puppeteer. She is described as being tall and slim with olive skin and black hair, earning her the nickname "Tanselle Too-Tall." The controversy centers on the casting of a Black actress, as some fans argue it deviates from the book's description of a Dornish woman with olive skin. Actress Tanzyn Crawford is, however, six feet tall, aligning with the character's notable height. Crawford addressed the criticism in an interview with Wonderland magazine, stating, "It was intimidating to step into something that people are so connected to... I definitely did get some negativity around race." She added, "but at the end of the day, I'm employed — and I'm following my dreams." The actress also revealed she received direct validation from the author himself. George R.R. Martin reportedly told Crawford, "You're exactly what I pictured [for Tanselle]," which she said gave her confidence in the role. The character of Tanselle plays a pivotal, if brief, role in the story. Her harassment by the cruel Prince Aerion Targaryen prompts the protagonist, Ser Duncan the Tall, to intervene, leading to a trial by combat that forms the novella's central conflict. "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" adapts Martin's "Tales of Dunk and Egg," which are known for a lighter, more adventurous tone compared to the political intrigue of "Game of Thrones" and "House of the Dragon." Crawford has noted she is the only person of color in the main cast and one of only a few women. This casting follows a pattern seen in other fantasy adaptations like "House of the Dragon," where the diversification of established houses has similarly sparked debate among viewers.
