Google Launches 'Nano Banana 2' AI Imager
Google has launched Nano Banana 2, a new top-tier AI image generator. The tool is designed for creating professional-quality headshots, product photos, and surrealist scenes, and was released alongside a free prompt library to teach advanced techniques.
Technically known as Gemini 3.1 Flash Image, Nano Banana 2 merges the high-fidelity capabilities of the previous Nano Banana Pro model with significantly faster generation speeds. This new version became the default image model across Google's ecosystem, including the Gemini app and developer APIs, on February 26, 2026. The model introduces major upgrades in output consistency, a key challenge for portfolio projects involving sequential visuals. It can maintain the resemblance of up to five distinct characters and the fidelity of up to 14 specific objects across multiple generated images. Resolutions are also enhanced, with outputs available from 512px up to 4K. A significant capability for developers is the model's new semantic editing feature, which allows for changes via natural language prompts rather than manual masking. The system can also leverage real-time Google Search results to accurately render specific real-world objects, people, and places, grounding its output in current information. For students building applications, Nano Banana 2 is accessible through the Gemini API and Google's Vertex AI platform. This allows for the integration of its features—such as photorealistic product image generation, in-image text rendering, and scene compositing—into custom full-stack or AI/ML projects. To address content provenance, all images created with Nano Banana 2 are automatically embedded with Google's SynthID watermark and C2PA Content Credentials. These features provide a technical method for identifying the content as AI-generated, a critical component of responsible AI development practices.
