Edtech ClassDojo Taps Pay Theory for Payments
Edtech platform ClassDojo has launched embedded payments for U.S. school districts, choosing specialist Pay Theory over Stripe. The move highlights a trend of vertical-specific providers winning in niche markets where regulatory complexity or unique partner relationships create an advantage.
ClassDojo's platform is used in 95% of pre-K-8 schools in the United States, reaching over 51 million students across 180 countries. This massive, engaged user base of teachers, parents, and students provides a significant built-in network for any new service, including financial tools. Historically, K-12 payments have been a major operational burden for schools, with administrators spending upwards of 40 hours a month on manual reconciliation of fees for everything from field trips to supplies. This reliance on cash, checks, and disconnected payment portals creates inefficiencies, security risks, and difficulties in tracking funds. Pay Theory's winning proposition is its focus on financial inclusivity, directly addressing the estimated 30% of K-12 families in the U.S. who are unbanked or underbanked. The service allows parents to generate a barcode in the ClassDojo app and pay with cash at over 65,000 retail locations like CVS, Walgreens, and 7-Eleven, which then digitally reconciles with the school's account. This move marks a significant evolution in ClassDojo's revenue strategy, which has historically relied on a freemium model. The core communication app is free, with revenue generated from an optional "ClassDojo Plus" subscription for parents seeking additional features. Embedded payments introduce a new, transaction-based revenue stream layered on top of its communication platform. While general payment processors like Stripe are active in the edtech space, processing over $20 billion for education-related businesses and offering tools for recurring billing and diverse payment methods, they lack a native solution for cash-paying families. This created an opening for a specialized provider like Pay Theory to solve a specific, critical pain point for ClassDojo's diverse user base. The official launch of ClassDojo Payments is slated for late 2026. The partnership allows ClassDojo to consolidate multiple school functions—mass notifications, classroom communication, and now payments—into a single platform, deepening its moat and increasing the administrative dependency on its ecosystem.
