Belgium Seizes Russian 'Shadow' Tanker
Belgian authorities, with French naval support, have seized a Russian oil tanker in the North Sea. The vessel is believed to be part of the Kremlin's "shadow fleet" used to illegally circumvent Western sanctions, highlighting Europe's increasing resolve to crack down on Moscow's covert energy sales.
The seized tanker, identified as the "Ethera," was boarded by Belgian special forces in an overnight operation in the North Sea, within Belgium's exclusive economic zone. French naval helicopters provided support for the mission, which Belgian and French officials have hailed as a "major blow" to Russia's sanctions evasion efforts. The vessel was escorted to the Belgian port of Zeebrugge to be formally impounded. Authorities report the Ethera was sailing under a false flag from Guinea and that its documents are also suspected of being forgeries. The ship's captain, a Russian national, has been detained for questioning as a criminal investigation gets underway. This particular vessel was already on the European Union's list of sanctioned entities. Russia's "shadow fleet" is estimated to consist of between 1,000 and 1,400 vessels, many of which are aging tankers with opaque ownership structures. These ships often utilize flags of convenience from nations like Panama or the Comoros, and engage in deceptive practices such as turning off their tracking systems to hide their movements. This network allows Russia to continue selling its crude oil to international markets, often in Asia, circumventing sanctions imposed after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The G7, European Union, and Australia imposed a price cap in December 2022 to limit Russia's oil revenue. This policy prohibits Western companies from providing shipping, insurance, and other services for Russian oil sold above a certain price. The shadow fleet is Moscow's primary tool for evading this restriction and maintaining its income from energy exports. This seizure represents an increasingly assertive stance by European nations against Russia's sanctions evasion tactics. Western naval forces have intensified their tracking of the shadow fleet in the Baltic and North Seas since the beginning of the year. Beyond sanctions busting, these vessels are also suspected of involvement in vandalizing underwater infrastructure and conducting espionage. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised the "strong action" by Belgium and France, stating the Ethera had long been under US, EU, and UK sanctions but continued its illegal transport. Russia has previously condemned such seizures of its tankers as "acts of piracy."
