Spotify is pushing deeper into books as independent bookstores head into their biggest annual sales weekend yet. (newsroom.spotify.com) On April 15, Spotify said its “Audiobooks in Premium” program is now live in 22 markets, a little more than two years after the company first launched audiobooks. The same update turned on printed-book sales in the United States and United Kingdom through Bookshop.org links inside Spotify. (newsroom.spotify.com) The Bookshop feature adds a “Get a copy for your bookshelf” button on audiobook pages and sends buyers to Bookshop.org for pricing, inventory and shipping. TechCrunch reported the rollout is live now on Android in the United States and United Kingdom, with iPhone access scheduled for the following week. (techcrunch.com) Spotify is also adding tools aimed at keeping listeners inside its book ecosystem. The company said Page Match, first announced in February, now works in more than 30 languages, while Recaps gives listeners short audio refreshers based on where they last stopped. (newsroom.spotify.com 1) (newsroom.spotify.com 2) That expansion arrives as independent stores prepare for Independent Bookstore Day on Saturday, April 25. The American Booksellers Association said about 2,000 member bookstores are expected to participate this year, up from 1,600 in 2025. (publishersweekly.com) The trade group’s own event page describes the 2026 edition as the 13th annual Independent Bookstore Day and says stores in every United States state and territory will take part online and in person. The event is held on the last Saturday in April and is designed as a one-day national promotion for independent booksellers. (bookweb.org) Spotify’s pitch is that audiobook discovery can lead to print purchases rather than replace them. Bookshop.org, which directs online orders to independent bookstores, gives Spotify a way to attach a physical sale to a title a listener already found in the app. (newsroom.spotify.com) (techcrunch.com) The company is also building more book-style merchandising inside the app. Spotify said its Audiobook Charts are expanding to Germany with weekly rankings for top titles overall and by genre, after earlier chart launches in the United States and United Kingdom. (newsroom.spotify.com) For bookstores, the timing puts a major digital platform in the market just before a national indie retail event built around store traffic, exclusives and community programming. For Spotify, it ties audiobook subscriptions, recommendation tools and print buying into one sales funnel as April 25 approaches. (publishersweekly.com) (bookweb.org)
