Report: Mid-Market Leaders Focus on Cost, Talent, Tech

A new report from professional services firm CBIZ indicates that leaders of middle-market businesses are prioritizing cost management, talent strategy, and technology investment. The Q1 2026 Mid-Market Pulse Report offers insights into how these companies are navigating a complex economic environment and planning for future growth.

- The report's key findings show 84% of middle-market businesses are prioritizing cost optimization and productivity. - Rising labor costs were cited as a challenge by 41% of business leaders, matching the 41% who reported concerns about technology and AI modernization. - Beyond the headline priorities, leaders also pointed to pricing pressures, working capital constraints, and shifting customer demand as key factors influencing their 2026 planning. - The data reflects a sentiment of "pragmatic confidence," according to CBIZ President and CEO Jerry Grisko, who noted companies are not pulling back but are instead moving deliberately on efficiency, talent, and technology. - The findings are based on feedback from a substantial pool of more than 1,300 CBIZ clients and client service professionals. - In conjunction with the report, CBIZ has launched a new initiative, "Insights. Applied.," which is designed to help organizations implement strategies based on the report's findings.
