Spring Garden Prep Tasks Urged Now

UK gardening expert Alan Titchmarsh encourages gardeners to begin crucial spring tasks "right now" to ensure healthy plant growth, emphasizing cutting back dead growth and preparing beds ahead of the new season. Irish gardeners face heavy rainfall challenges as spring approaches, with experts advising patience with planting and careful soil monitoring. Florida gardeners are being urged to check for invasive plants at garden centers.

- In the UK, common spring pests include aphids, which suck sap from plants, and slugs and snails that feed on young leaves. Gardeners should also watch for the Cabbage White butterfly, whose caterpillars eat brassicas like cabbage and broccoli. Fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and rose black spot are also prevalent in the damp UK climate. - Climate change is altering gardening timelines in Ireland, with the first flowering of the blackthorn now occurring more than 40 days earlier than was typical, a shift that disrupts its relationship with pollinating insects. This "phenological mismatch" also affects the emergence of pests versus their natural predators, such as aphids and ladybirds. - Florida's warm climate allows invasive plants to grow year-round without a dormant period, enabling them to easily crowd out native species. Commonly sold invasive plants to avoid include lantana, asparagus fern, and water hyacinth. The Brazilian Peppertree is prohibited under Florida law; it creates a dense canopy that shades out other plants and is in the same family as poison ivy. - A key spring task in the UK is to apply mulch in mid-to-late spring to help the soil retain moisture for the summer and suppress weeds. It is also the ideal time to prune spring-flowering shrubs after they have finished blooming to encourage new growth. - For UK vegetable gardeners, early spring is the time to sow hardy crops like broad beans, onions, and garlic directly into the soil. Tender vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, and chillies should be started indoors on a windowsill or in a greenhouse. - The first lawn mow of the season in the UK should only occur after the risk of frost has passed, as cutting frosted grass can cause bald spots. It's also recommended to set the mower blades high for the first cut to avoid stressing the grass. - In Florida, even common houseplants like pothos and the snake plant can become invasive when planted outdoors, where they can form dense mats that choke out native groundcover. The air potato vine, another invasive species, can grow as much as eight inches per day.
