Bulgarian Ski Town Becomes Digital Nomad Hub

The Bulgarian ski resort of Bansko is successfully repositioning itself as a year-round hub for remote tech workers and digital nomads. The trend is diversifying the local economy and expanding the regional talent pool for companies hiring in Bulgaria.

The trend was kickstarted by German entrepreneur Matthias Zeitler, who co-founded the first hub, Coworking Bansko, with Uwe Allgäuer in 2016. Attracted by Bulgaria's 10% flat income tax and low cost of living, their goal was to build a community for location-independent professionals in the mountain town. The annual Bansko Nomad Fest has been a major catalyst for growth, starting with 100 attendees in 2020 and expanding to over 800 participants by 2025. The success of the festival, which celebrates the location-independent lifestyle, has significantly raised the town's international profile. This influx is creating a tangible economic shift, moving Bansko away from seasonal ski tourism. The members of Coworking Bansko alone are estimated to contribute over three million euros to the local economy annually, with nomads typically spending more than traditional tourists. The cost of living remains a key draw, with monthly expenses for a single person estimated at around $1,353 and apartments renting for as low as €250-€350 per month. This financial advantage, combined with access to the Pirin Mountains, has made the town a competitive European base for tech workers. In response to the growing community, Bulgaria began accepting applications for a formal digital nomad visa in late 2025. The visa allows non-EU remote workers to gain legal residency, provided they can show a minimum annual income of €31,000 from foreign sources. The growing ecosystem now supports multiple coworking spaces, including Nestwork and Altspace, catering to different work styles beyond the community-focused Coworking Bansko. This infrastructure provides a professional backbone for the hundreds of remote workers residing in the town at any given time.
