Mammoth Tusks Reveal Writing History

Patterns found on mammoth tusks are helping researchers retell the history of writing, according to a science team at the University of Tübingen. The ancient carvings provide new insights into the evolution of symbolic communication and script development, offering a tangible link to how early humans recorded information and communicated across generations.

The study, led by linguist Christian Bentz of Saarland University and archaeologist Ewa Dutkiewicz of the Museum for Prehistory and Early History in Berlin, analyzed over 3,000 signs on 260 Paleolithic artifacts. These artifacts, including mammoth ivory figurines and tools, were discovered in caves in the Swabian Jura region of southwestern Germany. Dated between 43,000 and 34,000 years ago, the objects feature recurring patterns of dots, lines, crosses, and V-shaped notches. A notable example is a 40,000-year-old mammoth figurine from Vogelherd Cave, which is covered in rows of crosses and dots. Another significant artifact is the "Adorant," an ivory plaque from Geißenklösterle Cave depicting a lion-human hybrid, adorned with rows of dots and notches. Using computational and statistical modeling, the research team discovered that the arrangement of these ancient symbols is not random decoration. The sequences exhibit a level of complexity and information density that is surprisingly similar to proto-cuneiform, an early form of writing that emerged in Mesopotamia around 3500 to 3350 B.C.E. This finding suggests that early modern humans who migrated to Europe may have already developed a system of intentional and conventional signs tens of thousands of years before the first recognized writing systems. While the exact meaning of the symbols is unknown, researchers theorize they could have been used to track time, record information about animal migrations, or represent significant events. The patterns remained stable for about 10,000 years.
