Fleet Data Can Help Reduce Insurance Claims, Rates

Technology firm Samsara shared insights on how commercial fleets can use operational data to combat rising insurance rates. By leveraging better visibility into fleet operations, companies can proactively reduce claims incidents. This data-driven approach demonstrates a direct path to achieving savings on insurance premiums.

The commercial auto insurance market has been under pressure for over a decade, with insurers in 2024 paying out more in claims and expenses than they earned in premiums for 12 of the last 13 years. This unprofitability, driven by factors like social inflation and costly "nuclear verdicts," has led to consistent and significant rate hikes for fleets. Insurers are shifting away from traditional underwriting models that rely on historical loss data. Instead, they are turning to telematics to capture real-time driving behaviors like speeding, harsh braking, and distracted driving to gain more accurate risk insights and enable usage-based insurance models. The results of telematics adoption are quantifiable. Fleets that combine telematics data with driver training see a significant drop in incidents; 72% report fewer crashes and claims. One analysis of fleets in their first year using Samsara's vehicle telematics and video-based safety solutions found a 63% reduction in crashes. Beyond prevention, telematics data transforms the claims process. Objective details on an incident's time, location, speed, and vehicle activity are available instantly. This information speeds up investigations, reduces disputes, and helps combat fraud, which can lower legal expenses and lead to quicker settlements. Video telematics, in particular, provides critical evidence. More than half of Samsara's dash cam customers have used footage to exonerate drivers in the past year, saving between $5,000 and $25,000 on average per incident. This data-driven approach has fostered new partnerships between technology companies and insurance carriers. Insurer Inigo Limited is using Samsara's telematics data to build data-driven pricing models, while Nationwide offers subsidized access to the technology for its E&S customers.
