Kyoto has a new three-star Michelin restaurant: Miyamaso, a mountain inn in Hanase, was promoted in the 2026 Michelin Guide Kyoto Osaka selection. (guide.michelin.com) Michelin announced the 2026 guide on April 23 and said it was the first new three-star restaurant in Kyoto in six years. The promotion brings Kyoto’s total number of three-star restaurants to six. (guide.michelin.com) Miyamaso is a ryokan, or traditional Japanese inn, and Michelin lists it under Japanese cuisine. The guide said the restaurant first won one star in 2010, moved to two stars in 2011, and reached three stars in the 2026 edition. Michelin said the restaurant’s approach stays close to local produce and traditional technique. Michelin also added 12 new Bib Gourmand picks, for places it considers good value, bringing the guide’s total selection to 479 restaurants. (guide.michelin.com) Michelin also introduced its first Sommelier Award for the Kyoto Osaka area in this edition, alongside Mentor Chef and Service awards. That makes the 2026 release a larger reshuffle than a single promotion at the top. (guide.michelin.com) For Kyoto, the headline is that a restaurant outside the city center joined the guide’s highest tier after a long gap. Michelin’s inspectors framed Miyamaso as a place where the landscape around the inn is part of the meal itself. (guide.michelin.com) (timeout.com) The new guide leaves Kyoto with six three-star restaurants and gives Michelin a fresh top-line name in one of its most watched dining cities. For Miyamaso, the change ends a 15-year run at one or two stars with the guide’s highest rating. (guide.michelin.com) (tokyoweekender.com)
