Shopify launches AI Toolkit for merchants

Shopify introduced an 'AI Toolkit' that lets merchants automate store management tasks through agents built on models like Claude and developer tools like VS Code, aiming to speed routine work and personalise operations. Shopify is trying to turn “change my store” into the kind of sentence a merchant can type into an artificial intelligence assistant instead of a task list spread across five admin screens. On April 9, Shopify released an AI Toolkit that plugs tools like Claude Code, Cursor, Gemini Command Line Interface, Visual Studio Code, and Codex into Shopify’s own docs, code rules, and store commands. Shopify says the toolkit can let an agent read Shopify documentation, check code against Shopify’s application programming interface schemas, and then use Shopify Command Line Interface “store execute” capabilities to manage store tasks instead of only suggesting text. (shopify.dev) That changes the job from “ask a bot for advice” to “give a bot the keys, but only for Shopify-shaped work.” Shopify built the toolkit so the agent uses current platform rules instead of guessing how a theme, app, or admin action is supposed to work. (shopify.dev) Shopify is also making installation deliberately simple because this only works if merchants and developers actually turn it on. The company says the plugin install takes one or two steps, auto-updates as new capabilities ship, and requires Node.js 18 or higher plus one supported tool. (shopify.dev) Underneath this launch is a bigger Shopify push that started before this week. Shopify’s developer tools already included a Dev Model Context Protocol server that lets assistants search Shopify docs, inspect application programming interface schemas, and answer questions using current platform resources. (shopify.dev) Shopify spent early 2026 pushing the same idea on the customer side too. In a January 11 post, Shopify said it was building “agentic commerce,” opened a Universal Commerce Protocol with Google, and said merchants would be able to sell into artificial intelligence channels like Google Search AI Mode, the Gemini app, Microsoft Copilot, and ChatGPT through Shopify-managed infrastructure. If Shopify wants buyers to shop through artificial intelligence agents, it also needs sellers to update products, storefront code, and operations through artificial intelligence agents without breaking checkout, inventory, or app integrations.
