BuzzFeed compiled 59 home improvements you can tackle yourself without hiring a handyman. The suggestions range from quick fixes to transformative projects, all aimed at making living spaces more functional, stylish, and personalized.

The do-it-yourself (DIY) home improvement market is a rapidly expanding sector, with a valuation of approximately $857.05 billion in 2024 and a projection to reach over $1.19 trillion by 2034. This growth is fueled by a desire for personalization, the rising costs of professional labor, and an increase in homeownership among younger generations. A significant driver of this trend is the millennial generation, with 73% identifying as DIYers. Younger homeowners are more inclined to purchase "fixer-uppers" and utilize online resources to customize their spaces, viewing these projects as a way to build equity. In fact, three out of every four homeowners now undertake their own home improvement projects. The internet and social media play a crucial role in the DIY movement. Roughly 55% of millennial DIYers turn to YouTube for tutorials and how-to guides, while platforms like Instagram and Pinterest serve as major sources of inspiration. This digital support system empowers homeowners with the confidence and knowledge to tackle projects themselves. While saving money is a primary motivator for 62% of Americans who choose to DIY, it's not the only reason. Many are driven by the enjoyment of the work itself and the desire to have direct control over project timelines, rather than depending on a contractor's schedule. The most common DIY projects include interior renovations and general home repairs and maintenance, which together account for a significant portion of the market. Simple upgrades like a fresh coat of paint, updating cabinet hardware, or enhancing curb appeal are popular choices that offer a high return on investment. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly accelerated the DIY trend, as people spent more time at home. From 2019 to 2021, spending on DIY home improvements in the U.S. saw a dramatic 44% increase, reaching a record $66 billion. Looking ahead, the market is expected to continue its upward trajectory. Major retailers are investing heavily in digital platforms, including AR and AI-powered tools, to further support and engage with the growing community of DIY enthusiasts.
