Edible Garden Expands with Tetra Pak

Citing significant retailer demand, Edible Garden is expanding into the ready-to-drink beverage category. The company announced it has selected Tetra Pak to equip its new Midwest production facility to power the expansion.

This expansion into ready-to-drink (RTD) beverages is a significant strategic shift for Edible Garden, a company primarily known for its controlled environment agriculture (CEA) specializing in organic herbs and lettuces. The move leverages their "Zero-Waste Inspired" farming model to create a vertically integrated "Farm-to-Formula" platform. The new Midwest facility, located in Webster City, Iowa, is a 6.2-acre site acquired from NaturalShrimp Farms Inc. This plant will serve as a dedicated hub for RTD and clean nutrition, encompassing over 200,000 square feet of food-grade manufacturing space. Partnering with Tetra Pak provides Edible Garden with aseptic packaging technology. This process sterilizes the beverage and the package separately, allowing products to be shelf-stable for extended periods without refrigeration or preservatives, which significantly reduces food waste and transportation costs. The global market for RTD beverages was valued at approximately $766 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $1.3 trillion by 2030. Edible Garden is targeting the growing consumer demand for convenient, clean-label, and functional drinks. This expansion follows a series of moves to strengthen its Midwest presence, including a new production line at its Grand Rapids, Michigan facility and distribution agreements with regional retailers like Busch's Fresh Food Market. Financially, the company has faced challenges, reporting a net loss of $11.05 million in 2024 despite revenue growth in prior years. This diversification into the lucrative RTD market represents a capital-intensive effort to improve profitability and scale its operations. The new Iowa facility also includes advanced aquaculture infrastructure and patented water treatment technologies from the NaturalShrimp acquisition. Edible Garden plans to use these assets for R&D in nutraceuticals and to pilot next-generation aquaculture, aligning with its focus on sustainable technology. Phase one of production at the new facility is slated to begin in the first quarter of 2027, focusing on a range of beverages including protein, plant-based, dairy, and other functional drinks.
