Mardi Gras Celebration Planned for SF Today

The 20th annual Mardi Gras San Francisco Style event is scheduled to take place today, February 17th. Hosted by The Village Project, the free, all-ages celebration will run from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The event offers a local take on the traditional Mardi Gras festivities.

- This event aims to uplift the legacy of the Fillmore District as a historic center of Black art, music, and community life. - The celebration begins at 5:00 PM with a second line procession led by the MJ Brass Boppers down the Fillmore corridor. - Following the procession, a free community blues concert will take place at 7:00 PM in the Fillmore Center Plaza, featuring performances by Cherronda G and Tebo. - The Village Project, a nonprofit focused on youth and family services through cultural programming, has been organizing this event for two decades. - Founder of The Village Project, Adrian Williams, is originally from Louisiana and initiated the event to bring a taste of New Orleans' tradition to the Fillmore district. - While San Francisco has larger Carnaval celebrations in May, this Fat Tuesday event offers a local take on the traditional pre-Lenten celebration. - Other Mardi Gras festivities in San Francisco include celebrations in the Mission District and North Beach, each with its own unique style and musical focus. - Attendees are encouraged to wear costumes, masks, and beads to participate in the festive atmosphere.
