Meta's Threads Challenging Twitter's Dominance
Meta's "killer app," Threads, is fueling speculation about Twitter's displacement, with industry narratives framing it as a pivotal moment in social media evolution, according to 36kr. Threads' rapid user adoption is reportedly driven by Meta’s integration playbook and strategic leverage of Instagram’s network effects.
Meta's Threads boasts 450 million monthly active users and 137 million daily active users in 2026. In the United States alone, it has 33.9 million monthly active users. The platform is particularly popular among Gen Z, and is projected to generate $8 billion in revenue for Meta in 2025. Threads distinguishes itself with seamless Instagram integration, allowing users to easily connect with followers without creating a new network. Posts can include text, images, and videos up to 5 minutes long. Meta is also exploring integrating Threads more closely with Instagram, potentially displaying trending discussions directly in the Instagram feed. X (formerly Twitter) has approximately 396 million users worldwide in 2024. It has over 400 million monthly active users, with around 192 million users engaging with the platform daily. While Threads has been gaining traction, X still has a larger user base. Meta plans to make Threads compatible with ActivityPub, an open, decentralized social networking protocol. This would allow users to share content across multiple platforms, increasing control over their online presence.
