Ericsson Demos 5G Drone Detection System

Ericsson demonstrated a proof of concept for drone detection that integrates sensing capabilities directly into 5G mobile networks. The technology allows telecommunications infrastructure to sense its surroundings, providing wide-area detection for applications like airspace safety and transportation security.

- The technology, known as Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC), is a key component of future 6G networks and allows the network to "sense" its environment by analyzing radio signal reflections. - This proof of concept, demonstrated at Ericsson's U.S. headquarters in Plano, Texas, utilized the company's massive-MIMO radios to detect and track unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). - A key advantage of this approach is the ability to detect "passive" objects—those not connected to the network—turning the communications infrastructure into a wide-area sensor grid similar to radar. - Beyond drone detection for airspace safety, potential applications include traffic monitoring, environmental sensing, and enhanced network performance through context-aware services. - This system can augment national security and public safety by providing an additional layer of detection for unauthorized drones or vehicles in sensitive areas. - Ericsson has also explored related 5G drone applications, such as a proof of concept with an autonomous, 5G mmWave-connected drone for indoor inventory management in its own smart factory. - The development of ISAC involves industry-wide research into new waveforms, signal processing, and AI-driven pattern recognition to balance communication and sensing performance. - In collaboration with TDC NET in Denmark, Ericsson Drone Mobility has also tested using 5G networks to provide precise drone positioning with an accuracy of within 2cm, which is crucial for safe and complex drone operations.
