Yosemite entry reminders

Recent guides warn Yosemite visitors that entry reservations may be required during peak periods and that planning ahead is now common advice. (paulagaston.com) One guide even lists a $35 vehicle pass valid for seven days and says peak‑season entry reservations can be mandatory from May–October via recreation.gov. (ad-hoc-news.de)

Yosemite National Park is not requiring timed entry reservations in 2026, reversing the peak-season system that many travel guides still describe. (nps.gov) The National Park Service announced the change on February 18, 2026, after reviewing 2025 traffic, parking, and visitation data. Park officials said most weekdays stayed within operational capacity, so a season-wide reservation rule was dropped for this year. (nps.gov) Visitors still have to pay the entrance fee. Yosemite’s official fee page says a private vehicle pass covers the driver and passengers, and entrance fees remain in effect even without a timed-entry system. (nps.gov) The park is replacing advance reservations with on-the-ground traffic controls. Yosemite said it will use real-time traffic monitoring, active parking management in Yosemite Valley, added staff at key intersections, and congestion alerts during busy periods. (nps.gov) That leaves a narrower planning message for 2026: you do not need a vehicle reservation to drive in, but you still need reservations for many things once you are there. Yosemite’s trip-planning page says lodging, camping, and backpacking reservations are strongly recommended, especially from April through October. (nps.gov) Recreation.gov, the federal booking platform, lists 15 Yosemite campgrounds and says campground reservations typically open months in advance. It also says special permits are required for activities including Half Dome and wilderness trips. (recreation.gov) Camping demand is already pushing Yosemite to use lottery systems for some sites. Recreation.gov says North Pines Campground is using a one-time Early Access Lottery for the 2026 season, giving successful applicants a chance to book dates across the year. (recreation.gov) The practical effect is that older advice about May-through-October entry reservations is now outdated for 2026. Yosemite’s current guidance is simpler: pay the entrance fee, expect crowd controls on busy days, and book overnight stays and permits early if you want specific dates. (nps.gov)
