BMS Bets on RI's Early-Stage Biotech

Bristol Myers Squibb is doubling down on Rhode Island's life sciences sector by pursuing early-stage deals with AI-driven drug discovery firms. This strategy signals long-term confidence in the region's innovation ecosystem and presents new opportunities for local startups and talent.

This strategic focus aligns with a broader push by the state to cultivate its life sciences sector. The Rhode Island Life Science Hub (RILSH), backed by an initial $45 million state investment, is a key part of this effort. Dr. Mark A. Turco serves as the President and CEO of the Hub, which aims to transform the state into a nationally recognized center for biotech innovation. A cornerstone of this strategy is the new Ocean State Labs incubator in Providence's Innovation District, which will officially open in the first quarter of 2026. Managed by venture development firm Portal Innovations, the 30,000-square-foot facility will provide lab and office space for up to 30 startups, creating a hub for entrepreneurs and researchers. The incubator has already announced its five inaugural members, which include companies focused on gene therapy, tissue regeneration, and cancer therapeutics. Among them is OncoLux Inc., a MedTech company developing advanced optical imaging and AI technology to improve oncology surgical procedures. This growing ecosystem in Rhode Island presents a target-rich environment for large pharmaceutical companies. More than 60% of Bristol Myers Squibb's current development pipeline is sourced from external collaborations, highlighting its reliance on partnering with innovative startups to fuel its growth. Globally, BMS is actively forming partnerships around complex technologies. In July 2025, the company and Bain Capital created a new, independent firm with a $300 million financing commitment to develop five of BMS's experimental immunology drugs. It also maintains a collaboration with PathAI to utilize artificial intelligence in pathology for clinical trials.
