Pi Mai rush: buses expand

Vientiane has increased bus capacity for the mid‑April Pi Mai Lao holiday after a sharp rise in advance bookings, with operators treating the period as the country’s peak domestic travel season. Vientiane added bus departures for Pi Mai Lao this week as holiday travel surged ahead of the April 14–16 Lao New Year break. (kpl.gov.la) At the Southern Bus Station, manager Souksavat Sisouk said on April 10 that the terminal had prepared 70 daily trips for the festival period. He said passenger volumes rose between April 8 and April 10, with advance demand especially strong on VIP evening services. (kpl.gov.la) Official fares were kept at posted rates even as traffic climbed, including 180,000 kip from Vientiane to Pakxan, 230,000 to 300,000 kip to Thakhek, and 400,000 to 500,000 kip to Pakse. The same fare list put Vientiane–Savannakhet at 520,000 to 550,000 kip and Vientiane–Attapeu at 590,000 to 600,000 kip. (kpl.gov.la) Pi Mai Lao is one of Laos’ biggest annual travel periods because workers and students leave the capital to return to home provinces while festival crowds head to tourism centers. The Prime Minister’s Office scheduled the 2026 public holiday for Tuesday, April 14, through Thursday, April 16. (vientianetimes.org.la) Travel demand is also being pulled by longer festival calendars outside the capital. In Luang Prabang, district authorities scheduled Pi Mai Lao events from April 11 to April 20, including the Nang Sangkhane pageant, the Hae Vor procession, and the bathing of the Phra Bang Buddha image. (kpl.gov.la) The extra buses also come after confusion earlier this month over whether celebrations would be curtailed. Laotian Times reported on April 1 that a notice suspending Pi Mai events applied only to units under the Ministry of National Defense, not to the general public nationwide. (laotiantimes.com) The Traveler reported on April 15 that operators in Vientiane were also adding vehicles and backup capacity on routes to Pakse, Savannakhet, Luang Prabang, and Vang Vieng, while spreading departures across more time slots. The outlet said terminals were promoting early-morning and late-evening buses to ease crowding at peak hours. (thetraveler.org) For travelers leaving Vientiane, the immediate message from terminals was practical rather than ceremonial: book ahead, check the ticket details, and load luggage quickly. On the busiest Pi Mai days, a full bus is expected to leave as soon as it is ready. (kpl.gov.la)
